Citra Grove

Bench is one of many breweries in wine country that raise the bar for beer, as if in response to the competition from their grape-growing neighbours. Citra Grove, the first in a series of single-hop, dry-hopped sours, tempers the bright acidity of lactobacillus souring with a rich, pulpy fruit profile. That’s particularly evident in the heavenly aroma, which features pineapple, mango, candied lemon and a spicy, floral perfume. The fruit is more subdued on the palate, sitting alongside mineral-laced acidity and surprisingly prominent biscuit-y malt. Strong carbonation carries the beer into a gently bitter, dry finish accented by herbal hops, peppery spice and hints of brett funk. Well balanced with interesting subtleties.
